*Summary:*
Responsible for substation design, renewables design and protection and control relaying applications for new and existing sites.
Design projects range from routine equipment modifications and installations to the complete design of new transmission facilities.
This work requires an understanding of power systems, transformers, protective relaying, and electrical engineering principles.
Must be able to manage multiple projects in various stages of design so as to meet project schedule deadlines; provide design support to field personnel during project implementation; develop and maintain sufficient level of expertise in use of CAD software for efficient production of engineering work; and collaborate in a team environment to spread knowledge and to produce the best quality product possible *General Roles / Responsibilities:* Support technical field staff and consultants with renewable energy, substation, and protection & control applications: * Provide technical support to investigate and resolve technical challenges associated with engineered document inquiries, protection and control settings, and testing and commissioning methodologies and applications Design, plan layout, and coordinate power system facilities and equipment installation / upgrade to include the following: * Electric power generating stations * Transmission substations Distribution substations * Renewable energy generation / distribution / microgrid stations * Electrical distribution power systems & associated equipment Support engineering team in design development requirements and creation of schedules and project cost projections.
Provide technical training to junior staff by preparing presentations and workshops and conducting one-on-one meetings to assist with their technical growth.
Provide professional mentorship while setting and maintaining a positive professional example for the team and junior staff.
Estimates labor, material, construction, and equipment costs with supervision.
Support preparation of, or prepares drawings and specific type of equipment and materials to be used, in construction and equipment installation.
Perform quality control (QC) reviews and lead QC review meetings on applicable engineering deliverables produced by junior staff, peers and remote offices on small, medium and large projects while adhering to the PDS quality management standard.
Prepare electrical power systems equipment specifications.
Review vendor / manufacturer information.
Capture and organize electrical data for power system analysis.
Prepare power system models / Load flow analysis/ Short circuit analysis / Protection & coordination analysis / Settings review & analysis / Arc flash analysis.
*Renewable Energy and Substation Engineering (PV / BESS/ Wind/ Geothermal):* Perform as a Lead Project Engineer.
Lead and/or perform Renewable Energy and/or Substation Physical Electrical engineering design (including general arrangement, electrical plans and sections, grounding plan and details, raceway plan and details, shielding plan and details, lighting plan and details, etc.
) at HV and EHV voltage levels while adhering to prevailing standards, practices, procedures and project/program requirements.
Responsible for the day-to-day execution of projects within the substation physical team: project execution, adhering to budgets and schedules, peer quality review, and mentorship; with some client interaction and business development assistance.
Plan and manage project development engineering activities and support technical diligence on site selection and project acquisitions.
Manage engineering for PV and ESS projects and optimize system designs to achieve targets for production, generating capacity, capital cost, financial returns, etc.
Develop, refine or evaluate energy input assessments and power output expectations.
Perform or oversee analyses to optimize site layouts and equipment selection to maximize performance and minimize lifecycle costs.
Direct activities of designers, consultants and contractors, and manage meetings and conference calls to achieve efficient use of resources, meet deadlines for deliverables, minimize delays, avoid crises and resolve conflicts.
Write, edit and/or review technical scope of work documents, specifications, procedures, site reports, progress reports, feasibility studies, proposals, presentations, etc.
; review and negotiate technical aspects of EPC contracts, interconnection agreements, among others.
*Protection & Control Engineering:* Prepare P&C station drawings to include relay and meter one lines, AC schematics, DC schematics, electrical diagrams, panel arrangements, and wiring diagrams.
Protection and Controls design arrangement and layout.
Equipment selection and specification.
Component and material assemblies.
One and three-line diagrams.
Knowledge of contemporary protection microprocessor based equipment and integration of same into operating schemes functioning with distributed intelligence; Control and protection schemes including the preparation of schematics and wiring diagrams.
Application and interconnection of SCADA systems.
Substation grounding analysis and design.
Cabling and wiring and associated conduit systems.
*Basic Qualifications* * Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with >8 years’ experience (for E3) or >10yr (for Senior Engineer) * State registration as a Professional Engineer, or the ability to obtain a PE License within 6 months from date of hire * Experience with Electrical Transients Analysis Program (ETAP) Experience with performing calculations with MathCAD Prime Experience with AutoCAD / SDS / Revit * Experience with substation physical and protection and control design Technical speaking and writing skills * Strong documentation skills * Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities * Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment * Must have a valid driver’s license * Clear Background Investigation to obtain NERC / FERC/ NRC access *Desired Qualifications:* * Master’s degree in electrical engineering with > 15 years experience * Experience with engineering programs and software (including ASPEN, ETAP, CDEGS, WinIGS, or vendor software) * Construction support experience * Testing & Commissioning experience * Active membership in national engineering societies and work-groups (IEEE, Power & Energy Society (PES), etc.
