JOB SUMMARY: The Senior Designer, Technical is responsible for the creative, innovative, and organized thinking processes to support and create multiple technical and creative approaches and solutions to meet interactive design criteria and modernize Universal Parks & Resorts attractions and guest experiences globally.
This includes guest experience, game design, hourly capacity (THRC), show timing and narrative flow, and physical interactive elements.
This position contributes to the development of integrate advanced technology project scopes in creative development, game and experience design, planning and scoping, documentation, models, drawing packages, and execution in the field.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Manage early concept development through design development of new interactive attractions, rides, shows, and environmental projects.
Work with creative and producing teams on the concept and defining the interactive experience(s) through development of design documentation.
Responsible for ensuring the accuracy and practicality of interactive design and implementation through all phases of a project.
Schedule creative sessions, demos, meetings, interactive mockups and playtesting as needed.
Contribute to the development and execution of the Creative Director’s vision through the production of integrated design documentation and playtesting of interactive mockups.
Monitor design progress, anticipate and plan for next steps and design requirements.
Bring in stakeholders as needed.
Ensure interactive projects meet or exceed creative design intent and achieve creative desired guest experience on budget and schedule.
Assist with development of budget, schedule, technical, and integration.
Lead the bidding and oversight of vendors.
Support the design and installation of the project elements as they relate to guest interactives, while ensuring the overall creative intent is achieved as envisioned by the Creative Director.
This includes production and installation, in a manner that meets the project design intent, schedule and budget.
Organize interactive reviews, mockups, and playtests as needed during the process.
Develop project presentations for internal and external audiences to communicate project concept, content and status, and to gain approvals.
Understand and actively participate in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.
Performs other duties as assigned.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Varies per project or assignment.
Indirectly supervises efforts of vendors assembled to support specific project-related tasks.
Number and types of staff will vary dependent upon the project.
QUALIFICATIONS: Strong understanding of art pipelines include rigging, modeling, texturing, animation, lighting, and VFX.
Experience with large-scale game engines such as Unity or Unreal Strong knowledge of color theory, art history, scenic painting techniques, sculpture, architecture, perspective, theatrical lighting techniques and storytelling Strong ability to communicate complex artistic ideas through a combination of written and visual materials.
Creative thinker and problem solver Strong communication and collaboration skills Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
SCOPE: Nonroutine; general policies applied to frequently changing situations; detailed understanding of creative and technical issues.
Responsible for the interactive experience that allows guests, by their actions, to change the show.
Influences decisions of moderate and significant nature requiring a high degree of tact and maturity.
Will work in all phases of projects as directed, from blue sky through project closeout, design and field installation.
Will be assigned to a wide range of tasks and project sizes and types.
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in art, Game Design, Digital Media, Theater, Creative Writing, or related field required.
Advanced degrees preferred.
EXPERIENCE: 7-10 years designing interactive experience-based attractions and/or lands for theme parks or games; 5-7 years of experience with virtual, augmented, or mixed-reality; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
