JOB SUMMARY: The Specialist, Merchandise Packaging & Labeling role supports compliance-related activities for NBCUniversal and Universal Destinations & Experiences for branded, direct-sourced consumer goods which are sold at retail or otherwise distributed at theme parks and other locations worldwide.
Global vertical product lines currently include, but are not limited to, toys, children’s products, food/drinkware, apparel, souvenirs, stationery, collectibles, packaged consumables, and cosmetics.
This role develops, maintains, and drives product packaging & labeling consistency (where possible) to meet global regulations & Universal’s mandated requirements in order to support the Company’s rapidly-expanding global sourcing objectives & new business models.
This role partners with the Compliance, Product Development, Sourcing, & Management teams to develop & maintain product packaging & labeling approaches to ensure corporate and regulatory compliance program objectives are met.
Daily tasks include creating compliance-related packaging & labeling templates, reference guides, and layouts for developed products, with an emphasis on regulatory labeling, care/use instructions, and product descriptions in multiple languages for assigned geographical distributions.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Packaging & Labeling Development Develop packaging & labeling art files, guides, and templates for Universal-developed merchandise, including but not limited to, incorporating applicable regulatory labeling requirements, instructions, product information, etc.
within existing brand creative and/or style guide elements Format packaging & labeling to ensure compliance with applicable US (CPSIA, FDA, FTC, etc.
), international, and other regulatory rules for packaging & labeling using content provided by compliance experts, product developers, test lab partners, and/or vendors Research and communicate with internal stakeholders on packaging & labeling requirements for new product types, benchmarking against similar products in our industry, and global labeling solution proposals Communicate and consult with Management, Compliance, product developers, and vendors on any specific packaging & labeling inconsistencies or labeling test failures in order to identify and implement actions which will enhance a product’s safety, quality, and reliability Submit and see through to completion any product- or packaging-related foreign language translations executed by internal or external parties Contribute to department cost of goods goals by ensuring packaging & labeling solutions will meet departmental goals while eliminating or mitigating any additional cost or production impacts to product Compliance Packaging & Labeling Guide Management Develop and maintain comprehensive packaging & labeling visual guides for internal and vendor use for areas of geographic distribution, as assigned Collaborate with Compliance team and test lab partner(s) to review, implement, and communicate packaging & labeling changes, age grade reviews, regulatory updates, and program guidance revisions to Management, product development teams, and vendors Monitor and conduct in-depth research into emerging or changing regulations, use of pictograms for instructions, and/or compliance trends to provide recommendations to Management for guide improvements & process efficiencies Product Review & Approvals Review and approve products and packaging & labeling submissions (for assigned categories) for adherence to applicable Universal and regulatory compliance standards Provide design considerations and packaging & labeling assessments for select products Collaborate with internal and vendor partners to ensure packaging complies with Compliance approval comments Technical Support for Policy & Process Management Research and coordinate with Compliance & Management to develop policy & process recommendations on product markings, packaging & labeling requirements, age grades, global & regional standards, and common practice / benchmarking Assist with packaging-related sustainability matters and other emerging compliance initiatives Training, Guidance, & SOP Documents Partner with Compliance & Management to develop and maintain packaging & labeling related compliance documentation, including training materials, guidance documents, policies, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for internal and/or external partners.
EHS Understand and actively participate in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.
Perform other duties as assigned QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of US product labeling regulations / compliance Knowledge and understanding of various packaging / label production phases & printing processes / technologies / materials and equipment Knowledge of product development process, graphic design/layout process and commercial printing process MUST be highly proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, with an emphasis in Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign Experience working in various color fields, including CMYK, RGB & the pantone color system Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and willing to learn new programs specific to business needs and processes.
Knowledge of retail sales environment EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree, or related coursework is required; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
EXPERIENCE: 2+ years of Quality Assurance, Compliance, or equivalent experience.
2+ years of recent experience in technical art / graphic design related consumer product packaging & compliance labeling or equivalent combination of education and experience.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: English language (spoken/ written/ understanding) is required Knowledge of Mandarin Chinese or Japanese language (spoken/ written/ understanding) is a plus Strong written and verbal communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills is required Willingness and ability to occasionally travel domestically.
Willingness and ability to communicate with speakers of foreign languages and people of other cultures Willingness and ability to participate in meetings and calls in other time zones (times other than standard business hours).
